BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team suffered two non-conference losses in a Thursday afternoon doubleheader against Rhode Island College, falling by the score 10-1 and 19-8.
Amanda Perry's two-RBI single in the first gave the Anchorwomen an early lead, which was then followed up by an RBI single in the second. Holding a 3-0 lead entering the third, the Anchorwomen burst the game open with a seven-run inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
After being shut out over the opening four innings, the Hawks got on the board in the fifth, as Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) singled in Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) for the only score in the game for RWU. RIC went on to secure the win at the end of the frame.
Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) dropped to 3-8, getting touched for nine runs (eight earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Rachel Urato (Williamsville, Vt.) came on in relief, giving up a run in 2.2 innings. Melanie Neece improved to 10-1 for the Anchorwomen, pitching four innings of scoreless ball.
Gregory finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Hawks. Perry had two hits, three RBI, and a run for Rhode Island College.
The second game saw the Hawks fall in deep hole early, as the Anchorwomen scored seven runs in the first two times to the plate. Trailing by seven, the Hawk offense came to life in the bottom of the second. Renee Bilotti (Bristol, R.I.) started the rally with a long single to the fence, scoring Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Gregory. After bringing 11 batters to the dish in the inning, the Hawks' six-run inning cut the deficit to only one.
Rhode Island College regained four of those runs in the third, capped off by a three-run triple by Perry. Two innings later, the Anchorwomen put the game out of reach, putting together a seven-hit, eight-run inning to take an 11-run lead en route to the win.
Stephanie Collins (Burlington, Mass.) took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings before being relieved by Gregory after taking a line drive to the wrist. Neece earned her second win of the day, finishing off the final 3.2 innings of the game after Jenna Deveines surrendered five runs in 1.1 innings.
Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.), LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.), and Adrianna Sicari (Hartsdale, N.Y.) each had two hits and a run scored in the game. Perry finished with three hits and three RBI, while Krystal Bilek scored three times with two hits and four RBI.
