BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team earned two wins over Anna Maria College Thursday afternoon by 11-2 and 7-4 scores to move over .500 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Anna Maria scored the first run of the game when Sarah Boyda (Oxford, Mass.) scored on Lauren Hachey's (Grafton, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the first. The Hawks then came through with three runs in the bottom of the inning, as
Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.), Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, Mass.), and
Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.) each singled in a run.
The turning point in the game came in the bottom of the third when the Hawks touched up the AmCats for six runs, taking advantage of three errors committed in the inning. The AmCats got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth, but RWU would add two more in the bottom half. A 1-2-3 fifth inning was all
Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) needed for her sixth win of the year.
Nealon, Teves, and
Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) each had two hits in the game, with Nealon adding two RBI and Teves and Caprice an RBI apiece.
For the AmCats, Hachey went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Holly Renna (Charlton, Mass.) dropped to 2-12, allowing nine runs (five earned) in three innings.
The Hawks came out swinging in the beginning of the second game, scoring five runs in their first at-bat, highlighted by Gregory's two-RBI double. Gregory then went to work on in the circle, holding the AmCats hitless over the opening three innings.
Anna Maria finally got to the Hawks in the fourth, as Boyda walked to lead off the inning. She would later come around to score onJill Hurley's (Worcester, Mass.) RBI double. RWU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and looked on its way to an easy victory, but Anna Maria would not go down easily.
The AmCats slowly crept back into the game, scoring two runs in the sixth to make it a 7-3 game. In the top of the seventh, Anna Maria opened the inning with a pair of walks, leading to Sera entering the game to record the final two outs. She put away the next two batters before surrendering an RBI double to Alyssa Boykin (Worcester, Mass.) to put the tying run at the plate. Sera coaxed a groundout to third to secure the win and earning her first save in the process.
Gregory got the win, going six innings and giving up four runs while striking out six. Hachey took the loss, getting touched for seven runs (four earned) in six innings.
Gregory, Nealon, and
Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.) each had two hits in the game, while Gregory and Nealon also knocked in two runs each.
Roger Williams (14-16, 8-6) plays its rescheduled game against Regis College tomorrow at Wellesley College at 3:30 p.m. Anna Maria (6-21, 4-15 TCCC) travels to the University of New England Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
