MILTON, Mass.- Taking on defending TCCC champion Curry College, the Roger Williams baseball team earned a split, taking the first game 3-1 before dropping the second game 10-3. The second game marked the first conference loss this year for the Hawks, whose record now stands at 15-7, (7-1 TCCC).
In the afternoon's first game, the Hawks got on the board early. Junior Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball, and was brought home on a ground out by Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass). Senior Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) had a solo home run to left field to make it 2-0.
The Colonels struck back in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.) walked, advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt by Ben Blaisdell (Mansfield, Mass.), and went to third on a single by Chris Judd (Peabody, Mass.). An error at third base allowed Sweeney to score, giving Curry their first run.
Roger Williams was able to add a run in the sixth, as Lambert, who was 3-3 for the game, notched a single to left. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Lambert came home on an RBI single by Andrew Haycock (Medfield, Mass.). Curry ended the game on a double play in the bottom half of the inning, making the final score 3-1.
Junior right-hander James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.) went the distance for the Hawks, earning the win. He alllowed just three hits in 25 batters faced, and is now 4-0 in his starts this season. Jim Simon (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) takes the loss for the Colonels.
In the second game it was Curry that broke out the bats first, putting a run on in the bottom of the second before adding to their advantage in the third. Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, Mass.) had a two-RBI double, while David Vincent (Grafton, Mass.) earned an RBI with a sac fly. A batter being hit by a pitch and an error at third gave the Colonels their fourth run of the inning to make the score 5-0.
Roger Williams was able to score in the top of the fifth, as Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) led off with a single, advanced on a double by Lambert, and scored on a sac fly by Dahill. Simpson singled to left, scoring Lambert for the second run of the inning.
Curry answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own, and would go ahead 10-2 after adding three more runs in the sixth. Roger Williams was only able to bring one runner home in the seventh, as Haycock hit in to a fielder's choice, scoring Simpson. The final score was 10-3.
Colonels pitcher Mike Hughes (Middleboro, Mass.) went five innings and struck out seven in the win, while the Hawks' Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) pitched all six innings in the loss, allowing ten hits.
Roger Williams continues their busy spring schedule when they take to the road to face Eastern Connecticut State in a 4:00 p.m. single game.
