BRISTOL, R.I. – Bridgewater State College defeated the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team Sunday afternoon to win the Fourth Annual Roger Williams University Turfer Classic.
Tough, physical play and a stifling defense by both teams marked the play of the first half, with both teams only managing four shots apiece in the period, not to mention the fact that the Hawks and Bears combined for 21 fouls in the first period alone.
The Bears notched its first score of the game early in the second period, when Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.), Offensive MVP of the tournament, launched a deep shot from 20 feet outside of the box in the 46
th minute. Hawk goalie
Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) was able to leap and get a hand on the ball, but did not have enough reach to knock it away, as the ball trickled over his head and into the net.
Bridgewater State followed that up with another score twenty minutes later, as Jon Nutting (Rockland, Mass.) notched a goal in the 66th minute off of a pass by Flores.
Bears goalie Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, Mass.), who was also named Defensive MVP of the tournament, needed to make only one save on the day to earn the shutout.
For the Hawks,
Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y.), Archie Maoh (Monrovia, Liberia), and
Jared Falconer (Ludlow, Mass.) were each named to the All-Tournament team for their play over the weekend.
Roger Williams (1-1-0) will rest for the remainder of the week and take on Wheaton College (Mass.) Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State gets at Wheaton first on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
