Volleyball splits TCCC tri-match opener

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team split its two contests Saturday afternoon during The Commonwealth Coast Conference opening tri-match, defeating Western New England College 3-2 but falling to Colby-Sawyer College 0-3.

 

In the Hawks' first match against the Golden Bears, Western New England took an early two-game lead, winning by the scores 25-21 and 25-15. Roger Williams was able to rally back with three straight wins by the scores 25-17, 25-14, and 15-9. With the win, Roger Williams remains undefeated against the Golden Bears, holding a 10-0 advantage in the series.

 

“It's nice to get a conference win under our belt,” said Head Coach Bret Stothart.

 

Freshman Michaela Ross (Old Bridge, N.J.) led the Hawks in kills in the match with 11, while junior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) tied a season-high with 38 assists. Sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) led the way with 23 digs.

 

In the second match of the day, Western New England took on Colby-Sawyer in a hard-fought four-game set. The Chargers would eventually emerge with a 3-1 win, by the scores 25-22, 27-29, 25-22, 30-28.

 

In the battle of the two undefeated teams on the day, Colby-Sawyer and Roger Williams squared off in the last match of Saturday afternoon. The Chargers came away with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 win to begin its 2008 TCCC campaign with a 2-0 record.

 

“I think at times our team showed the intensity necessary to win in this competitive conference,” said Stothart. “Going forward, every player needs to show that intensity for every point of every game to be successful.”

 

Sophomore #Rebekah Dion# (Old Saybrook, Conn.) hit .462 in the match, with seven kills on 13 attempts and only one error. Sophomore Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) led RWU with nine kills. Bosworth tallied 27 assists, while Hurd totaled 16 digs.

 

Roger Williams (8-3, 1-1 TCCC) will go on the road Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Connecticut College. Western New England College (3-4, 0-2 TCCC) will host a 7:00 p.m. match against Rhode Island College, while Colby-Sawyer (3-3, 2-0 TCCC) has a 6:00 matchup at Plymouth State University on Tuesday.
