Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Volleyball team picked up its fifth win of the season Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University by the scores 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18.

After falling behind to the Warriors one set to none, the Hawks rallied to win the next three sets, primarily on the strength of its defense. RWU averaged 19.3 digs per game over the course of the match.

“It was a solid effort all around both offensively and defensively,” said Head Coach Bret Stothart. “I think the intensity was really strong on the court and everybody made plays when we needed them.”

One of those players who continued to make those plays was sophomore middle hitter Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who hit a blistering .632 on the court with 12 kills on 19 attempts without a single attack error. She benefited from the setting of senior Kirsten Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.), who led the Hawks with 28 assists.

In addition to her 12 kills, Dion added two solo blocks and five block assists.

On the defensive side, sophomore Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) tallied a game-high 21 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) also chipped in with 17 digs, while sophomore libero Eileen O'Leary (Southington, Conn.) had 14 digs.

Roger Williams (5-1) will host the Roger Williams University Invitational Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m., with the University of New England, Rivier College, and Amherst College.
