MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team suffered its first Commonwealth Coast Conference loss of the season Saturday afternoon, as Curry College defeated the Hawks 1-0.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, as Hawk keeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) and Colonel goalie Matthew Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) held the opposition scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play.
The game appeared to be headed to overtime until Curry's Graham Becker notched the first score of the game with only 6:30 left in the contest. The Hawks had three opportunities to tie the game in the final six minutes. Ardy Jagne (Bronx, N.Y.) launched a shot that was blocked by a Colonel defender, which was later followed by a saved shot by DJ Hunter (Middletown, Conn.).
Hunter had one more opportunity to knot the contest with under two minutes to play, but the shot ricocheted off the post, allowing Curry to come away with the win.
Plate made four saves in the game, while Newsome made three stops in the win.
Roger Williams (3-2-1, 2-1-1 TCCC) travels to Gordon College Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. game, while Curry (4-1-2, 1-0-1 TCCC) hosts Anna Maria College Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
