WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team earned a 2-1 decision over Gordon College Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
After a scoreless first half, the Scots struck first in the 55th minute taking advantage of some apparent miscommunication by the Hawks' defense. As a Matt Horth header fell in between the Hawks' goalkeeper and back line of defense, senior forward Dan Engberg snuck in between and poked the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper. The ball trickled into the empty net and the Scots were granted a surprising 1-0 lead.
Shortly afterwards, the Scots were given a chance to take a commanding lead when Noah McGarr was taken down in the penalty area. However, Matt Horth missed the penalty kick wide right.
It appeared that the Engberg goal might stand up as Gordon enjoyed one of their best defensive performances of the season for much of the match. But with only 5:32 remaining the Hawks' Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Mass.) used his head to finish a beautiful cross from Brandon O' Donovan (Coram, N.Y.), and knotted the score. Less than one minute later, Jared Falconer (Ludlow, Mass.) ripped a long shot past Scots' keeper Zach Frey for the game-winning tally.
Horth and Engberg provided much of the Scots' offense combing for seven shots on goal. Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) made seven saves for Roger Williams.
Gordon (3-3-1, 1-1-1 TCCC) will battle Anna Maria at 2:30 on Saturday, September 27th. Roger Williams (4-2-1, 3-1-1 TCCC) will host Colby-Sawyer at 1pm on Saturday.
