BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Volleyball team managed a split in a non-conference tri-match, as the Hawks defeated the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth 3-1 but then fell to Babson College 2-3.
In the first match of the day, the Hawks dropped the first set of the day 19-25 to UMass-Dartmouth. The team was then able to tie the match at one apiece with a 25-20 win. RWU escaped with a close 25-22 win in the third game, then eased through the clinching game by a 25-13 margin.
Sophomore outside hitter Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) led RWU in the match with 11 kills, in addition to seven digs. Junior setter Caryn Lecca (Ludlow, Mass.) handed out a team-high 17 assists, while junior middle hitter Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) tallied ten kills on 25 attempts with only two errors. Freshman libero Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) served up four aces in the game for the Hawks.
The second match of the day saw the Hawks open with a close loss to Babson, dropping the first set 22-25. Tightly-contested play would characterize the entire match, as the Hawks responded with a 25-23 win of their own. Babson took a 2-1 advantage in the following game, with another close 23-25 win. Yet the Hawks would force a deciding fifth game by pulling out a 25-21 victory in the fourth set. However, the alternating wins would continue as Babson earned the win by taking the fifth game 15-10.
Dolan led the way with ten kills on 23 attempts, while junior libero Michelle Beatrice (Medfield, Mass.) totaled a game-high 21 digs.
“There were times when individuals played great but it was a struggle all day to get all six individuals to play great at the same time,” said Head Coach Bret Stothart. “It's disappointing to get a split today. We just didn't come ready to play.”
Roger Williams (10-6) will return home Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. conference match against Endicott College. It will be the Hawks' first home match since September 13.
