Late rally pushes Women's Soccer over Anchorwomen

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.A late goal helped push the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to victory over Rhode Island College Monday afternoon, as the Hawks defeated the Anchorwomen by a 1-0 margin.

Neither team could manage to put across a score on the board over the first 80 minutes of action, though it was through no fault of the effort on the offensive end. Rhode Island College put up 11 shots over that span, while Roger Williams had 20 shots of its own.

RIC sophomore goalie Maddie Pirri (Bristol, R.I.) remained active over that period, making nine saves to keep the game at a scoreless stalemate.

That changed in the 80th minute, with junior midfielder Amanda daCunha (Wethersfield, Conn.) setting up the only score of the game. daCunha launched a corner kick from the right side which was headed down by sophomore defender Taryn Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.). Freshman forward Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) was able to get to the ball and put one in past Pirri, for the eventual game winner.

Junior keeper Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) held on for her second consecutive shutout, needing to make one save in the game.

Sophomore defender Alicia Lardaro (Peace Dale, R.I.) had the Anchorwomen's lone shot on goal, a long ball from well outside the box that had the distance but found the gloves of Garside.

Roger Williams (2-1-0) heads up to Boston Saturday for its 2:00 p.m. conference opener against Wentworth Institute of Technology, while Rhode Island College (1-4-0) travels to Wheaton College (Mass.) Thursday for a 4:30 game.
