BRISTOL, R.I. – Wrestling at the Metro-New England Challenge, Saturday, at Hunter College in New York, N.Y., RWU posted a 1-2 record, including a 29-16 win over the host college.
In the day's first round, RWU met Hunter College where senior quad-captain Andrew Hawley (Huntington, Mass.), wrestling at 141, pinned his opponent at 4:35 to give RWU the early 9-3 lead. Hunter responded with three straight victories, including a major decision and a win by fall. RWU junor Chris Nadeau (Granby, Conn.) snapped Hunter's win streak, earning a win by fall at 4:08, sparking the Hawks to win the final three bouts of the match including a technical fall victory for senior James Woods (Demarest, N.J.) and a win by fall for sophomore Philip Kelly (Quincy, Mass.).
The Hawks faced The College of New Jersey in the second round, falling in the end, 31-6. RWU won two matches with senior Michael Trayser (Dublin, Ohio) taking a 9-7 decision in the 125 bout and sophomore Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.) earning an 11-8 decision at 285.
In the final match of the day, RWU faced-off against New York University. Hawley earned his second win by decision in the 141 bout, as did Nadeau at 174 and senior Dan Woods (Demarest, N.J.) at 197. Kelly again pinned his opponent in the heavyweight match, but it was not enough as RWU fell 23-15.
The Hawks move to 13-7 overall in dual meets this season with their next contest scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7, at Rhode Island College with the University of Southern Maine. The first match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
