SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Western New England College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 6-2 loss against fifth-seeded Roger Williams Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 14) in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament.
Junior Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, CT) captured her No. 1 singles match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over sophomore Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, MA), and teamed with sophomore Caitlin Osepchuk (Ocean Grove, NJ) for an
8-1 win over DeSimone and senior Kristen Ayers (Acton, MA) at the top doubles position.
WNEC senior Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, CT) defeated Osepchuk 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles flight to finish the season with a perfect 15-0 record.
Murnane and freshman Linda Mustafa (Chicopee, MA) defeated sophomore Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, MA) and freshman Tracy Klein (New City, NY) 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Wolfe, who didn't play in the single competition in the Hawks' 5-4 loss to WNEC September 26 in Springfield, came back to defeat Mustafa 6-1,
7-6 at No. 3 singles.
RWU senior Katelin Richard (West Islip, NY) captured her No. 5 singles match and teamed with sophomore Kristin Dono (West Boylston, MA) for a win at No. 3 doubles.
Western New England College finished with an 11-4 record for the program's 11th consecutive winning season.
Roger Williams (9-5) will meet top-seeded Colby-Sawyer (a 9-0 winner over eighth-seeded Wentworth) in the semifinals of the tournament at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21 in New London, New Hampshire.
