BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU wrestling team earned a 1-1 split Saturday afternoon in Providence, defeating the University of Southern Maine, 39-3, before falling to host Rhode Island College, 21-19. Against RIC, senior Dan Woods (Demarest, N.J.) registered his career 100th win.
Dan Woods now ranks fourth all-time in the history of the RWU wrestling program behind Joe Fitzsimons (139), Pete Doucet (137) and Brian Bagdon (104). Meanwhile James Woods (Demarest, N.J.) moved into a tie with Keith Medeiros for ninth all-time with his 93rd career win.
In the Hawks' first match of the day they sought to avenge an earlier loss to USM at the New England Duals and proceeded to dominate the match. The Hawks stormed out to a commanding, 21-0, lead with wins in the first five bouts, capped by a senior Kyle Rodgers (Guilford, CT) pin at 157 lbs. USM's Morin bumped up a weight to stop the surge with a 3-1 decision 165 lbs., but junior eighth-ranked Chris Nadeau's (Granby, CT), 10-4, decision at 174 lbs. assured the Hawks of a win. RWU senior Andrew Hawley (Huntington, MA) scored an upset win over top-ranked Valastro, who bumped up a weight class and lost for the second time on the day.
In the final match of the day, RWU began by posting a 3-0 lead over Rhode Island College. The Anchormen stormed back with three straight wins en route to a 21-19 win over Roger Williams. Legacy earned his second win via a pin at 133 lbs., while freshman Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, NJ) outlasted Hawley, 7-2, in a 141 lbs. match that went into four overtime periods. Martini bumped up to 165 lbs. and scored an escape and takedown late in the third period for a win. Manley once again put RIC in position to win with his second pin of the day at 174 lbs., which put the Anchormen up 21-7, with three bouts to go. Both Woods seniors won at 184 and 197 lbs., respectively, but could not earn the necessary majors or pins to put the Hawks over the top.
RWU's next match is at WPI with Bryant University, Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m.
