BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wrestling team celebrated Senior Day Saturday in the Campus Recreation Center, honoring their six seniors in a ceremony prior to the day's action featuring the visiting Anchormen of Rhode Island College and the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine. RWU went on to defeat USM, 30-25, before falling to RIC, 21-12. RIC also defeated USM 31-15 in the day's opening match.
The Hawks' first match was a high-scoring affair as six points were awarded in eight of the 10 bouts. After a USM forfeit at 184, the teams traded pins with USM sophomore Travis Spencer (Waldo, Maine) needing 2:53 to earn six points and RWU senior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) needing 1:06. After another forfeit win for the Hawks, USM posted four-straight victories, including a win-by-fall at 133, a 14-2 major decision at 141 and another win-by-fall at 149. Peter Gilman's (Alfred, Maine) 4-2 decision at 156 increased the Huskies' lead to 25-18, but back-to-back pins by RWU sophomores Michael Monson (Southington, Conn.) and Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) gave RWU the 30-25 victory.
RWU faced RIC in the Hawks' second match of the day, jumping out to a 9-0 lead after Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.), Robert Markowski (Wayne, N.J.) and Cambi each earned three points with their decision wins. RIC junior Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, Mass.) snapped the Hawks' win streak, pinning Lemoine at 4:14 in the 125 bout and junior Jared Rhodes (Harrisburg, Pa.) evened the score at 9-9 with his 10-6 decision at 133. RIC moved ahead with decision wins in the next three bouts before Monson earned three points with a 5-4 win to move the score to 18-12 with just the 174 match remaining. Needing a pin, Parcel wrestled a strong RIC freshman, Brohen Krsulic (Brooklyn, Conn.), forcing overtime before suffering an 8-6 loss, finalizing the match at 21-12.
In the first match of the day RIC earned six points in three of the first four bouts with two forfeit wins and Regnault's win-by-fall to take the early 18-6 lead. USM responded with back-to-back decision wins at 133 and 141, but the Anchormen proved too strong, winning three of the final four bouts, including an 8-0 major decision for senior Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) and a win-by-fall for freshman Dustin Wilcox (Brooklyn, Conn.) for the 31-15 win.
RIC improves to 2-1 in the Pilgrim League and 10-8 overall, moving ahead of the Hawks in league standings. RWU moves to 2-3 in the Pilgrim League and 7-11 overall, while USM falls to 0-4 and 4-13.
The Hawks next match is their final home match of the year, giving fans one last opportunity to see the home teams' seniors: Nick Cambi, Dustin Conner, John Paul Garlasco, Nicholas Herrick, Bennett Kissane and Chris O'Shea. The match is Wednesday against WPI beginning at 7 p.m. RIC moves on to host the U.S. Coast Guard Tuesday at 7 p.m. and USM travels to face Norwich next Saturday at 1 p.m.
