Wrestling picks up pair of wins over RIC and Southern Maine

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Roger Williams University Wrestling team took home two Pilgrim League wins Saturday afternoon, defeating Rhode Island College 24-16 and the University of Southern Maine 21-16.

In the RIC match, after Roger Williams (10-4, 4-1 Pilgrim) went ahead, 12-0, following a pair of pins to open up the final match of the afternoon, the Anchormen roared back to rattle off four consecutive victories.

Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, N.H.) earned a 10-2 major decision at 285 lbs., while Brandon Gauthier (Lowell, Mass.) topped freshman Dante Porrazzo (East Hanover, N.J.), 4-0, at 125 lbs. to get RIC back in the mix. Freshman John Short (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) kept the momentum going at 133 lbs., as he battled back from an early deficit to knock off freshman Michael Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.), 10-6. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, R.I.) followed that victory with his second win of the afternoon with a 9-3 decision over freshman James Carroll (Needham, Mass.) at 141 lbs.

However, the next three matches went in favor of the Hawks, as sophomore Conor Hayes (Old Bridge, N.J.) earned a tight, 3-2, decision at 149 lbs. to lead the way. With his team leading, 15-13, senior captain Kyle D'Urso (Londonderry, N.H.) pinned his opponent at the 1:19 mark to give RWU a 21-13 advantage. Sophomore Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.) then earned the decisive, 10-4, victory at 165 lbs. to put the Hawks on top for good. Crump rounded out the match with a 7-2 decision over junior Jack DiBurro (Haverhill, Mass.) at 174 lbs.

In the first match of the day, Roger Williams opened the action with a pin at 184 lbs. thanks to junior Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.). After Suarez notched a victory at 285 lbs. for USM, Porrazzo responded for the Hawks with a 4-1 decision at 125 lbs. The Huskies were aided by back-to-back, 15-0, technical fall victories at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs., thanks to senior Cinjin Goeway (Pittsfield, Maine) and junior Peter Gilman (Alfred, Maine).

However, D'Urso, Crowell, and junior Robert Markowski (Wayne, N.J.) answered back for the Hawks with three straight victories in the final three bouts to help Roger Williams knock off Southern Maine, 21-16.
