SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England University dropped a 9-0 decision Tuesday to the Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener at the Volvo Outdoor Tennis Center, playing with heavy hearts on the 11-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The match was dedicated to Michael DiAgostino--the uncle of Golden Bear Michele Magliulo--who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
"Michele spent the morning in New York City as part of the 9/11 ceremonies and announced the names of those who passed (away) in this horrific event. She took the bus back to Springfield, arriving just moments before she was scheduled to play her singles match," said Western New England head coach Jennifer Kolins.
“Today was a day of family for Michele, honoring her uncle in New York, surrounded by her family of origin, and coming back to Springfield to be with her WNE tennis family. The heart that she showed in today's match, as she has all season, was a tremendous dedication to her uncle and I know he would have been proud of her," Kolins said.
“It was a long day, and I am glad I was in New York today, and I also wanted to be here for my team," Magliulo stated.
The men's and women's tennis teams gathered after the match to remember Mr. DiAgostino, 38, and all the victims who died on that day that changed America forever.
