WENHAM, Mass. — The visiting Hawks of Roger Williams University took a decisive 7-2 win over the Fighting Scots in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's tennis matchup today at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex.
RWU's Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) and Adrianna Maconochie (Easton, Conn.) opened the day with an 8-2 win over the Scots' Sarah Hickey (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles, while teammates Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn.) and Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Jessie Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) and Eva Kenna (Harvard, Mass.) 8-3 at No. 2. As Roger Williams was unable to field a doubles team for No. 3, Hannah Damon (Mystic, Conn.) and Rachel Kauffman (Harleysville, Pa.) picked up the win by default to make it a 2-1 match after doubles action.
The Hawks then went on to pick up straight-set victories in each singles match save for No. 6, which was credited as a win by default to Gordon's Murielle Renfort (Brockton, Mass.). Dutton and Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn.) posted the most commanding victories for Roger Williams in solo action at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, each capturing 6-1, 6-1 wins en route to the Hawks' overall win.
The Scots return to the court tomorrow for a non-conference match at Clark beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Hawks, now 6-2 overall (4-1 in the CCC), will travel to face Nichols in a CCC head-to-head on Saturday, Sept. 29.
