Gordon holds down Field Hockey

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon College utilized three unanswered goals to push past the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team Saturday afternoon, winning 5-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

Gordon nearly got on the board early on in the contest. After a penalty corner in the sixth minute, Megan Willeman (West Lebanon, N.H.) had a shot blocked, which led to back-to-back shots for Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) and Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.). RWU's Mary Yurkevicius (Charlton, Mass.) was able to turn away both attempts to keep the game scoreless.

On the counterattack, the Hawks pushed the ball down the field, eventually finding Sarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.) on the right side of the arc. She was able to get in front of a Scot defender and hook a shot into the left corner for her second goal of the year and give the Hawks the lead.

The Hawks' lead did not last very long, as Gordon was able to tie the game in the 15th minute. The Fighting Scots capitalized on a penalty corner, as Scott was able to put back the loose ball off her saved attempt into the right side of the goal.

Scott soon gave the Fighting Scots the lead in the 18th minute, taking a pass inside the left side of the arc from Lisa Richardson (Reading, Mass.) and putting it into the right corner for her 26th goal of the year.

The Hawks responded in the 22nd minute, with Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) feeding Curran a pass from the left side across the front of the goal. Curran was able to corral the ball and put in her shot to tie the contest at two apiece.

However, Gordon came right back three minutes later, with Collette Newcombe (Rowley, Mass.) converting a shot off of a deflected save for her first score of the year and regaining the lead for the Scots.

Scott added her third goal of the game in the closing minute of the first half, making a diving shot on a loose ball in front of the goal to put Gordon up by two entering the break.

Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) scored the lone goal of the second half in the 41st minute, taking a pass at the top of the arc from Scott and putting in her fourth goal of the year.

Gordon nearly added another goal with 11 minutes to play, as Abigail Sensing (Doylestown, Pa.) made her way down the field on a possible breakaway. However, Samantha O'Neil (Lincoln, R.I.) was able to catch up with her and knock the ball away before she was able to make a play on the ball.

Gordon keeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) earned the win, making three saves on the day, while Mary Yurkevicius (Charlton, Mass.) stopped a career-high 11 shots in her first game back in a month.

Roger Williams will play at Johnson & Wales next, while Gordon travels to Endicott next, both games on Tuesday.
