Field Hockey held down by Western New England

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England scored twice in the first half and made those goals count as the Golden Bears held off the visiting Roger Williams University Field Hockey team, 2-1, for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey victory of the season on Wednesday at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Hawks drop to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the CCC, while WNE snaps a six-game losing skid to improve to 2-8 and 1-4 in the conference.

Senior Alissa Doiron registered her first collegiate points by scoring the first goal of the contest just 2 minutes and 23 seconds elapsed. Sophomore Tori Cirocco was credited with an assist on the play.

Shannon O'Rourke, a freshman, made it 2-0 WNE's favor on a feed from senior Kimberly Perez in the 12th minute, placing her second goal of the season inside the left post.

Western New England freshman keeper Jessica Hale lost her shutout bid in the 54th minute when Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) stickhandled down the middle of the field and split the defense for her fourth goal, unassisted.

Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) kept the Hawks close by making five saves.

Shortly after Doiron's first career goal, RWU's Kaitlin Massey (Mendon, Mass.) had a solid chance from point-blank range to tie it 1-all with a shot to the upper right-corner of the cage, but sophomore tri-captain Katherine Ferrari reached high with her stick to knock the ball away for her team-leading 10th defensive save.

Despite the slim margin of victory, WNE dominated the school's first-ever meeting evidenced by an 11-4 lead in shots and an 18-4 advantage in penalty corners.
