Field Hockey takes down Johnson & Wales

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team notched a 5-3 win against intra-state rival Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.  The game marked the first of two in the next six days for the first year programs.

Roger Williams struck first when junior Sarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.) put in her own rebounded shot at the 12:58 mark.  The visiting Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 at the 19:36 mark after freshman Meghan Curran (West Milford, Conn.) blasted in a shot from 15 yards out.  RWU went up 3-0 in the 23rd minute as freshman Alexandra Baxter (Groton, Mass.) collected a loose ball five yards in front of the net and put in a shot to the corner of the net.  The Hawks took the 3-0 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.  RWU held a 7-2 advantage in shots for the stanza.

Johnson & Wales got on the board at the 49:20 mark as junior Courtney McTague (Saugua, Mass.) blasted in her own rebounded shot after a breakaway, making the score 4-1.  The Wildcats cut the lead to just two goals when they converted a penalty corner with senior Bethany Barrar (Somerset, Mass.) scoring with an assist to freshman Cassandra McClaflin (South Hadley, Mass.) in the 51st minute.

Link tallied her second goal of the contest, putting the Hawks up 5-2.  The Wildcats would not go quietly, however as McTague again put in her own rebounded shot at the 64:48 mark, cutting the lead to 5-3.  It wouldn't be enough though as RWU held on for the 5-3 victory.

Senior Aughtum Slavin (Wilmington, Del.), playing the kicking back made two stops for Johnson & Wales while freshman Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) had one stop in the win for Roger Williams.

With the setback Johnson & Wales is now 4-12 while Roger Williams improves to 4-11 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 26th when they travel to Wheelock for a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m.
