BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team fell to Simmons College in its first match since Spring Break, falling 8-1.
Simmons won their final match of the spring to tie the Simmons school record with 15 wins in a season. The Sharks swept the doubles competition before going five for six in singles as the team prepares for the NCAA tournament in May.
In doubles action, Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Megan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) teamed up to defeat Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) and Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.), 8-4 in the number one position, while Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) defeated Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) 9-8(6) in the number two spot. Closing out the sweep at the number three position was Carolien Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.), who paired to defeat Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Mass.) and Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn.), 8-6.
In singles play, the Sharks took the top three matches as Teague defeated Klein, 6-0, 6-3, Salmela topped Curran 6-3, 7-5 and Cokely defeated Schmidt, 6-0, 6-3. Brown picked up the lone point for Roger Williams, defeating Downey 6-1, 7-5 in the number four spot but the Khoury and Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) closed out their matches to lift the Sharks to a 8-1 victory.
With the win, Simmons moves to 15-4 on the season and will await the NCAA selection process to determine their opponent in the first round on May 9th.
