Sailing qualifies for Dinghy Championships and Women’s National Semifinals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team had a solid weekend of competition that included a berth to the Gill/ICSA National Dinghy Championship and the ICSA National Semifinals.

At the College Sailing Eastern Semifinals, the Hawks finished with a total score of 145 coming only nine points of runner-up Old Dominion University.  The Hawks dominated the A Division placing first out of the seventeen competing teams in the regatta with a score of 44.  The RWU sailors tallied four wins as well as five other second and third place performances out of their thirteen total races.  Representing the Hawks in the A Division were Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), and Jake Bartlein (Santa Barbara, Calif.).  In B Division, the Hawks came away with a seventh-place performance scoring 101.  Not to be outdone by their teammates, the Hawks posted five top-five finishes, including two first place performances.  Tyler Macdonald (Newport Beach, Calif.), Connor Needham (Shelter Island, N.Y.), Bianca Rom (Amityville, N.Y.) and Alexander Rudkin (Middletown, R.I.) all went to the water for the RWU in the B Division.

The third place finish guarantees the Hawks a chance to compete in the Gill/ISCA National Dinghy Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla. on May 28-30.

At the Reed Trophy, Roger Williams finished in seventh place out of the sixteen competitors with a score of 156.  With the finish, the Hawks punched their ticket to the ICSA National Semifinals later this month. In the A Division, the Hawks had a combined score of 85, including six top-ten finishes en route to a ninth-place score.  In the B Division, the Hawks finished fifth with a score of 71.  Racing for the Hawks in A Division were Haley Powell, and Breanne Baldino (Carlsbad, Calif.).  In the Division, Roger Williams was represented by Annie Schmidt (Larkspur, Calif.) and Samantha Bobo (Cohasset, Mass.).

The Hawks also competed at the George Morris Trophy, hosted by Boston University.  Roger Williams took tenth in the regatta with a combined score of 241.  In A Division, the Hawks came away with five top-five finishes including a win and three runner-up finishes earning sixth place with a score of 96.  In B Division, the Hawks posted a score of 145 to secure a 13th-place performance.  The Hawks were represented in the A Division by Connor Corgard (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Abby Preston (Newport, R.I.), while Jack Hunger (Rocky River, Ohio) and Nicole Sikowitz (Manasquan, N.J.) sailed for RWU in the B Division.
