Field Hockey emerges with a win in its first varsity game

Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass. – After spending last season as a club program, the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team made its varsity debut Saturday afternoon and came away with its first win in program history, defeating Bay Path College 2-1.

The Hawks came out aggressive in the first half, putting up 16 shots in the first half while holding Bay Path without a single shot in the entire period. Unfortunately for RWU, the Hawks could not find the back of the goal, as the Wildcats Anna Meyer stopped nine of RWU's attempts on net in the period.

After a scoreless first period, the Wildcats struck first shortly into the second half, with Kacy Hikel taking a pass from Danielle Hutchinson for her first collegiate goal and giving Bay Path a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks continued to fight their way back into the game, with their perseverance paying off at the 47th minute. Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) came through with the first official goal in RWU history with an unassisted score to tie the game at one apiece.

With time ticking away and the game headed to overtime, the Hawks found daylight in the 67th minute, with Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) finding Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) for the game-winning goal at the 67:08 mark.

The Hawk offense outpaced the Wildcats by a wide margin, outshooting Bay Path 30-6 over the course of the game.

Mary Yurkevicius (Charlton, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate victory and first win in program history, making four saves during the contest. Meyer took the loss despite making 17 stops in the game.

Roger Williams (1-0) looks to continue the winning ways next Saturday at Westfield State.
