Field Hockey downed by Gordon

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon College defeated the visiting Roger Williams University Field Hockey team 5-2 at the Brigham Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. The Scots broke through the Hawks' defense early when Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) scored her third goal of the season in seventh minute. Gordon would outscore the Hawks 4-2 the rest of the way to get their first CCC victory of the year.

Only a few days after the offense sputtered in a 1-0 loss to UNE, the Scots found their groove on the offensive end once again. Bailey found herself wide open on the left side of the crease after receiving a pass from forward Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.). The junior barely took a second to think—striking the ball past several sticks for the Scots first goal of the contest.

Gordon's leading goal-scorer, Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.), fought through double-teams all afternoon and recorded her first goal of the day off a pass from Collette Newcombe (Rowley, Mass.). The reigning CCC Offensive Player of the Week, Scott, would eventually rally off two more goals for her fourth hat-trick in the last six games.

Another stat-stuffing day puts Scott at 13 goals on the season, which leads the conference by quite a large margin.

The Scots held onto a 3-0 lead through the first 20 minutes when Roger Williams struck gold for the first time on the day. Katchen Lachmayr (Reading, Mass.) corralled a deflection off of Gordon keeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) and was able to sneak the ball past Bury's mitt to make it a 3-1 game.

Hawkins would add a fourth goal for the Scots, as the team took a 4-1 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was a bit more of a defensive battle, although the Scots continued to dominate the possession time. Scott completed the hat-trick 11 minutes into the second period off of a feed from Newcombe. Newcombe finished with three assists—providing two setups to Scott.

Down 5-1, the Hawks looked for a little offensive spark in the final minutes of the game. Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) ran with the ball for a long ways before finally taking a shot from just inside the shooting crease. Yaeger's shot flew into the air past Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) for the Hawks' final score of the contest.

Bury picked up her fourth win of the season and made two saves in the win. Hicks deflected one shot away in relief for the Gordon senior. Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) made five saves in a losing effort for Roger Williams.

The Scots (5-2, 1-1 CCC) are back in action on Tuesday for their third-straight conference home game, against Western New England at 4:00 p.m.
