BRISTOL, R.I. – For the first time since the 2007 season, the Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team defeated Nichols, coming away with a 5-4 win Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks entered the day winless against Nichols in their past five matches. Roger Williams last defeated the Bison October 9, 2007 in a 7-2 win.
Nichols, who has won the Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season title each of the past four seasons, drops its first regular season conference match since October 2, 2009, when Roger Colby-Sawyer College handed the Bison an 8-1 loss.
The Hawks led 2-1 after doubles play, getting wins at #2 and #3. 2. Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) and Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and Emma Carey (Venice, Pa.) 8-4, while Emma Limburg (New London, N.H.) and Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Conn.) won 8-1 over Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) and Samantha Rydell (Williamstown, Mass.).
Nichols came back with three wins in singles. Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at #1, with Benoit wrapping up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn.) Kelsey Peterson (Fairbanks, Alaska) also claimed a tough 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 over Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.).
The Hawks were able to claim the victory with wins at #3, #4, and #6. Brown and Limburg picked up identical 6-0, 6-1 wins at #4 and #6, respectively, over Carey and Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.). Lauren Schmidt rolled off her sixth straight win, beating Szepanski 6-2, 6-3 to help the Hawks toward the win.
Roger Williams (6-3, 3-1 CCC) will head to Bridgewater State on Thursday to face Head Coach Barry Gorman's former team. Nichols (6-3, 3-1 CCC) hosts Endicott on Sunday morning.
