Field Hockey falls to Westfield State

Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 5-1 in non-conference play against Westfield State University on Saturday.

Junior Kelly Kenney (Suffield, Conn.) scored two goals and freshman Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Westfield State.

Roger Williams (1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) scored in the third minute.  Despite the early setback, Westfield State applied consistent pressure and outshot Roger Williams by a 25-8 clip for the game.

Westfield (2-0) then took control by scoring four goals in an 11-minute span of the first half. Brouillette started the scoring blitzkrieg for Westfield, tying the game in the 18th minute.

Meg Doherty, another freshman, scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Brouillette in the 20th minute. Kenney and Becca Davis added unassisted goals to extend the lead to 4-1 entering halftime.

Kenney scored her second goal eight minutes into the second half courtesy of Kelsey Carpenter's assist.  

Mary Yurkevicius (Charlton, Mass.) suffered the loss for RWU, making nine saves in the game.

Roger Williams will host its first varsity game next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Bay Path College.
