Gordon gets past Field Hockey

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon College slipped past the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team 4-3 in a thrilling Commonwealth Coast Conference game Friday evening.

The Fighting Scots maintained possession in their offensive half for a majority of the early part of the game. Gordon put up five shots over the first ten minutes of the game, four of which were on goal. However, timely saves by Hawk keeper Meghan Augur (North Branford, Conn.) helped keep the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard.

In the 17th minute, both teams missed potential chances to get a goal on the scoreboard. Gordon's Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) swung and missed on a one-time pass to the left corner. On the other end, Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) had her attempt turned away by a strong kick save by Gordon's Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine).

Roger Williams began to generate more offensive chances late into the half, and the Hawks' persistence would pay off in the 29th minute. Yaeger had her shot illegally blocked by a Gordon defender, setting up a penalty stroke. Hicks got a glove on Yaeger's attempt but knocked it up into the upper left corner of the goal, putting RWU up 1-0.

The Hawks' lead would not last long, with the Fighting Scots tying the game back up two minutes later. Gordon brought the ball into the arc, setting up an opportunity for Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) to punch in the ball into the left corner for her sixth goal of the year.

Entering the second half, Gordon wasted little time breaking the tie. Two minutes into the period, Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.) gained possession and brought the ball into the left side of the arc and fired a hard shot to the left corner to put the Fighting Scots up by one.

Roger Williams responded in the 40th minute, with Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.H.)  finding Yaeger in the middle of the arc for her second goal of the contest. Yet the Fighting Scots came right back less than two minutes later. Fabry set up Scott with a pass back to her right, who then blasted a shot to the left side of the net.

The Yaeger-Curran combo for the Hawks connected for a second time on the night in the 46th minute, with Yaeger tallying her third score of the game to tie the contest once again. However, the Fighting Scots rallied once more in the 49th minute, with Scott scoring off of her own penalty corner. She would take the pass back from Brittany Hawkins (Hampsted, N.H.) and rocket the shot up the middle, giving Gordon a 4-3 lead.

Augur helped preserve the one goal deficit in the 51st minute, making a crucial kick save on Scott's shot off of a 3-on-1 opportunity. The Hawks had one last gasp in the final minute, earning a penalty corner. Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) put a shot on net, but the attempt was saved by Hicks, giving the Fighting Scots the win.

Hicks finished with seven saves for Gordon in the win, while Augur had nine stops in the loss.

Both teams will be in action on Tuesday, with Roger Williams (7-9, 3-6 CCC) hosting Western New England and Gordon (9-7, 6-3 CCC) heading to Nichols.
