Western New England mounts comeback over Field Hockey

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team suffered a crucial blow to its Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament hopes with a 3-2 setback to Western New England University Tuesday afternoon.

The loss puts Roger Williams (7-10, 3-7 CCC) 1.5 games out of the final playoff spot with two games left. Salve Regina, who the Hawks will close out the regular season against, currently sits in fourth place in the CCC and in the final playoff spot. Western New England (5-10, 2-7 CCC) still remains in the hunt for a postseason bid and will need to win its final three CCC games for a chance to clinch a tournament berth.

The Hawks struck first in the tenth minute. Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) took a penalty corner and passed to Alexandra Baxter (Groton, Mass.) at the top of the arc. Treweek slipped to the left side of the goal and tapped in a pass from Baxter to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Roger Williams would add another goal in the 24th minute. Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) passed across the back side of the scoring area to Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) on the left side of the goal. Miccile's first shot was denied by Golden Bear keeper Renee Rossignol (Topsham, Maine), but Miccile would connect on the follow-up shot, giving the Hawks the 2-0 lead.

Western New England, who remained active on the offensive end throughout the half, managed to come through in the 29th minute. Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) took a shot from inside the middle to the left side of the goal. Hillary Naranjo-Meija (Lowell, Mass.) got a stick on the ball mid-flight and directed in net for her second score of the year, bringing WNE within one.

The Golden Bears came back early in the second half, tying the game less than five minutes into the period. Megan French (Nelson, N.H.) sent a pass through the Hawk defense to the back of the goal, finding Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) for the score.

Western New England would take the lead in the 57th minute, with Naranjo-Mejia finding Carlson on back side of the goal for the go-ahead score. The Hawks tried to make one last push over the final ten minutes of the game, but the Golden Bears were able to hold on for the win.

Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) came on in relief of Rossignol, making two saves in the final 29:30 of the game to earn her second win of the season. Meghan Augur (North Branford, Conn.) set a new career high with 13 stops in the loss.

Roger Williams will host University of New England Friday evening on Senior Night, while Western New England welcomes Mount Holyoke on Saturday.
