UNE downs Field Hockey in home finale

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team was downed by the University of New England 7-0 in its final home game of the regular season.

Prior to the game, the program honored the three seniors on the RWU Field Hockey team, Sarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.), Samantha O'Neil (Lincoln, R.I.), and Katchen Lachmayr (Reading, Mass.) for their contributions.

UNE wasted little time getting on the scoreboard first, notching its first score in the third minute. Erin Bibber (Charlton, Mass.) set up Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) with a pass in the middle of the arc. Matarozzo turned and fired, hitting the back of the goal for her tenth goal of the year.

The Nor'Easters held on to its 1-0 lead until the 21st minute, when Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) added one to the Nor'Easter advantage. Warren made her way into the arc, getting past the Hawk defense and converted a shot on goal to put UNE up by two.

Ten minutes later, Bibber stole the ball from RWU near midfield and put on a series of impressive maneuvers through RWU's defense, making her way into the arc. Once in, she tapped in a shot to the middle of the goal, extending UNE's lead to three.

Olivia Madore (Arundel, Maine) notched the final goal of the first half for the Nor'Easters, tapping in a deflected save off of a shot by Alex Staples (Alfred, Maine).

Despite being outshot 15-1 by the Nor'Easters in the period, Roger Williams managed to get the ball in their offensive half multiple times, including taking three penalty corners. Yet the UNE defense was consistently able to get a stick on the ball on RWU's passes or getting a defender in the way of an offensive chance.

The Nor'Easters kept up the offensive pressure in the second half, as Vonde Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) picked up her eighth goal of the year in the 44th minute. She managed to score after putting back in a deflected save off of her own shot.

Then in the 51st minute, Brooke Marshall (Bow, N.H.) took a pass from Olivia Norton on the right side of the goal and crossing the shot into the other side of the goal. Cole Dion (Lakeville, Mass.) closed out the scoring for the Nor'Easters in the 65th minute, scoring on a loose ball from a saved shot by Kaitlin Hilton (Saco, Maine)

UNE keeper Holly Smith needed only one save for UNE in the win, playing 59:51 of action before being relieved by Nicole Schena (Andover, Mass.). Meghan Augur (North Branford, Mass.) tallied ten saves for RWU in the loss.

On Wednesday, Roger Williams (7-11, 3-8 CCC) closes out the regular season at Salve Regina, while the University of New England (12-5, 10-1 CCC) heads to MIT.
