Wesleyan slips past Field Hockey

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - In the first ever field hockey meeting between visiting Roger Williams University and Wesleyan University, the homestanding Cardinals edged the Hawks, 1-0.

Junior Hannah Plappert scored on a one-timer with 12:50 remaining in the first half. Senior Mackey Hemphill stole the ball near midfield and made a run to the net on the left side before crossing it to Plappert for the finish.

Wesleyan controlled the ball for most of the game and had a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 14-1 advantage on penalty corners.  Senior Vanessa Block and Plappert led the way with five shots each, while Hemphill added three to go along with her assist on the lone goal.

Roger Williams was led by sophomore Meghan Curran's five shots, while goaltenders sophomore Melora Lavoie and freshman Meghan Augur split the game with a combined eight saves. Lavoie finished with six saves in the first half, while Augur tallied two in the second.

In net for the Cardinals, junior Sarah Grundy picked up two saves in her second career shutout, one on a break away by Curran late in the first half to keep Wesleyan's 1-0 advantage.

Wesleyan next hosts Bowdoin in its NESCAC opener on Saturday September 6 at noon, while Roger Williams travels to Southern New Hampshire on Thursday September 4 at 4pm in its next start.
