Field Hockey upsets defending CCC champion Gordon

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.— Abby Treweek's (Lakeville, Mass.) goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation pushed the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team to the 2-1 upset over defending Commonwealth Coast Conference champion Gordon on Saturday afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

Gordon scored first early in the opening half, but the Hawks battled back with two unanswered goals to register their first ever win over the Fighting Scots in field hockey.

The Fighting Scots found the pace they wanted to play at early in the first half, as Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) and Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) tried to push the ball toward the Hawks' defense. Gordon earned its first penalty corner only four minutes into the game and a shot by Weiss at the 4:10 mark looked like it would put the Scots ahead. Roger Williams' keeper Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) swiped away the initial attempt, but the Fighting Scots quickly reset their offense. Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.) took the rebound and sent it back into the fray, where senior Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) was able to poke it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Roger Williams (5-3, 2-1 CCC) didn't take long to answer, as only a few minutes later the Hawks were on the counter. The Hawks earned a penalty corner just a minute following the Gordon goal and Roger Williams made the Scots pay. Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) chipped a pass to the left side of the net and Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) was able to get enough of the stick on the feed to send it past Gordon goalie Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) for the tie.

After the early flash of scoring both teams settled in a back and forth game, with most time being spent in the midfield. Gordon put the Hawks' defense on its heels midway through the second half when Weiss sent a hard, low drive toward goal. Lavoie was able to make the pad save, but the ball went directly out to Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) for the quick touch. Allcroft put a little too much back on the return, chipping it off the crossbar and out of play. Allcroft had another opportunity in the 60th minute, but again Lavoie made a kick save with her pads to keep Gordon's offense silent.

Roger Williams flipped the field in the minute following Gordon's two big opportunities and earned a penalty corner. Treweek took the initial pass on the penalty corner, sending it out to Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) at the top of the key. Angeley passed it right back to a wide open Treweek, who one-timed a shot to the corner of the Gordon goal and under the stick of Hicks for a 2-1 lead.

The Fighting Scots couldn't find a good scoring opportunity in the closing minutes, as the Hawks held on for the big early season upset. Hicks made four saves in goal for the Scots, while Lavoie totaled six saves to earn her fourth win. MaryKathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) picked up a defensive save for the Hawks as well.

Gordon (3-6, 1-2 CCC) outshot the Hawks 11-8 overall and 8-6 in shots on net. The Fighting Scots look to get back on track on Tuesday when they play host to Nichols at 4 p.m. Roger Williams hopes to continue its hot streak at Western New England on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
