Field Hockey defeats Endicott for first time

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team earned its first-ever win over Endicott College Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Gulls.

Roger Williams entered the game 0-5 against the Gulls in the team's first three seasons. The win is the first for RWU in the series and gives the Hawks back-to-back wins for the second time this season.

Possession alternated early on between both teams, as neither side was able to get in a rhythm offensively. Each team had only one shot taken over the first 20 minutes of play.

In the later part of the first half, Endicott began to get its offense in sync, notching five shots against the Hawks in the final 25 minutes of the period. However, Roger Williams' defense managed to hold off the Gulls, not allowing a goal in the first half.

The Hawks came through with the first score of the game in the 39th minute. Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) brought the ball down the right side, splitting a pair of Gull defenders. She was then able to cross a pass to Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.), who then scored her 11th goal of the year.

Over the next ten minutes, Endicott stepped it up on the offensive end, notching four shots and attempting three penalty corners. All four Endicott attempts would be turned away by Hawk keeper Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.), including a strong kick save on a shot by EC's Morghan Bresnahan (South Burlington, Vt.).

Endicott had another close call in the 59th minute, with Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) belting a chest-high shot on goal. However, Lunn was able to get her stick on it and block the shot.

Endicott made one final push in the final two minutes of the game, holding possession on their offensive end over the stretch.  The Gulls' Meghan Stanton (Newburyport, Mass.) and Emily Hirtle (Rowley, Mass.) each put up a shot in the final minute that sailed just wide. The Gulls had one last attempt with a penalty corner with no time remaining, but were unable to get a shot off.

Lunn had ten saves in the shutout win for RWU. Rose Bradley (Pottstown, Pa.) took the loss, making one save in 45:06 of action. Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) played the final 24:54, making two saves.

On Tuesday, Roger Williams (7-9, 4-5 CCC) hosts Salve Regina while Endicott (7-9, 5-4 CCC) welcomes Gordon.
