Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team kicked off Homecoming Weekend with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Gordon College Friday evening.
Â
The win gives Roger Williams its eighth win of the season, surpassing the single-season mark set by last year's squad.
Â
Prior to the game, the Hawks honored their two seniors
Kylie Burst (Howell, N.J.) and
Kelly Keating (Darien, Conn.) for their contributions to the program.
Â
Both teams struggled to get into their offensive sets throughout the early part of the first half, thanks to strong defensive play in the midfield.
Â
Gordon was held to only two contested shots over the first 15 minutes of play in the first period, while the Hawks, conversely, were unable to get a shot off over the same frame,.
Â
RWU tallied its first shot of the game in the 26th minute, with
Kelly Keating (Darien, Conn.) stealing a pass and attempting a shot into the left corner. However, she would be denied via a kick save by Gordon keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine).
Â
Burst nearly scored for RWU in the 28th minute, sending a high shot towards the right corner of the goal. Yet a good heads-up play by Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) allowed her to get a stick on the ball and keep the game scoreless.
Â
In the second half, the Hawks came close to tallying the first score of the day. In the 44th minute,
Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) brought the ball down the right side and put a shot towards the right corner of the goal. Hicks kicked the shot away but right to
Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.), who had an open shot of her own. However, Bailey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) managed to make a defensive save for the Fighting Scots.
Â
Ellsworth later played a key role in preserving the scoreless game for Gordon. She made two key defensive saves in the 56th and 59th minutes, including a one-handed stick save on her second stop. Her play helped keep the game tied at zero and send it to overtime.
Â
The game appeared to be headed to a second overtime before
Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) gave the Hawks the game winner with just under a minute to play. In the final minute, she sent a pass to
Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) off of a penalty corner. Mahoney passed it back to her on the left side, allowing her to hook in a shot into the left corner to give RWU the win.
Â
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) earned her second shutout of the year, making three saves for RWU. Hicks had four saves for the Fighting Scots in the loss.
Â
Roger Williams travels to Fitchburg State next on Tuesday, while Gordon wraps up the regular season Wednesday at the University of New England.
