Gordon squeezes past Field Hockey

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team suffered a close 1-0 setback to Gordon College Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.

Junior Marirose Brown (Melrose, Mass.) scored in the 23rd minute and Gordon's defense staved off everything that came at them in the win. The Fighting Scots snapped a six-game losing streak in the process.

Gordon improves to 3-8 on the season and 2-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while Roger Williams drops its third straight game. The Hawks sit at 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the CCC.

The Fighting Scots defense continued to be the strength of the team on Tuesday night. Gordon was outshot 18-5 during the game, but the Scots rejected all 11 of the Hawks attempts on frame.

Gordon had failed to score in six consecutive games, all losses, heading into the evening. Despite the losing streak, the Scots defense had the third best mark in goals against average in conference play. Only conference leader UNE has score more than one goal against the Scots in a CCC game.

Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was busy for most of the night, making four saves during the first 20 minutes. Roger Williams earned five penalty corners during that time frame as well.

Off a penalty corner in the 22nd minute, Gordon was able to clear the ball up field for a quick counter. Karli An-Gilbert (Scarborough, Maine) took a pass from Brown, but sent it right back to her on the left side. Brown sent a low ball past keeper Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) into the right corner for the go-ahead.

Roger Williams looked to have the equalizer in the 26th minute, but Bailey Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) was in perfect position on the goal line to swipe the ball away from danger.

After coming up empty in the first half, Roger Williams continued to press the Gordon defense in the second.  In the 46th minute Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) put a nice ball on net toward the left corner, but Gordon's Collette Newcombe (Rowley, Mass.) poked it away from just inside the post.

The Scots were able to contain the Roger Williams attack the rest of the way to earn the confidence-boosting victory.
Lunn made four saves in the loss, while Hicks pitched her second shutout of the season with nine saves. Hicks now leads the conference in save percentage following the game with a mark of .829.

The Hawks will look to get back into the win column on Thursday when they travel to Lasell. Gordon goes to New England College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
