Women’s Tennis advances to CCC Championship

Box Score WENHAM, Mass.—The third-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team upset No. 2 Gordon 5-1 on Thursday to punch its ticket to the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship match versus Endicott. Gordon was knocked from the semifinal round for the third consecutive season and finishes the conference slate at 10-3 overall. Roger Williams improves to 11-2.

Gordon took the regular season matchup between the two squads with a narrow 5-4 victory in Rhode Island.

The Hawks took control of the Fighting Scots early by taking all three doubles matches. Gordon had taken two of the three in the first meeting. The Fighting Scots struggled to find their footing early in the doubles lineup and comebacks fell short across the board.

Gordon got a point back when Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles. Roger Williams battled right back with a straight-set win at fifth singles by Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine).

The Fighting Scots dropped first sets in the remainder of the matches, but forced a third set in each match to keep the hope of a finals appearance alive. Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) ended the match effectively with a 6-3 third set over Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.).

Gordon has two more matches on the fall schedule, traveling to Rhode Island College next Tuesday and hosting Bridgewater State next Wednesday.
