Field Hockey bows out of CCC Tournament

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine - Top-seeded University of New England scored a goal in each half to defeat fourth-seeded Roger Williams University, 2-0, in the semifinals of the 2015 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Field Hockey Championship on Wednesday (Nov. 4) at the Big Blue Turf.

Big Blue (15-6) advances into Saturday's league championship match and will take on the winner between Salve Regina University and Endicott College. The reigning conference winner is into its third straight final and fifth in program history.

Hannah Buckley (Leominster, Mass.) put the Nor'easters on the board in 22nd minute, tucking a rebound on the right side of the cage. The slim UNE cushion remained at intermission, in spite of a 9-1 advantage in shots for the home team in the frame.

The Hawks had their best scoring chance on a mini break down the right wing in the 45th minute, but Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) came out to make a sliding save for Big Blue and maintain the edge. It was the last shot attempt RWU could manage in the contest.

Vonde Saunders (Conway, N.H.) netted a lengthy shot from the right side of the circle for some insurance in the 60th minute for UNE, which finished on top of sizable margins in shots (20-3) and penalty corners (15-3).

Smith's stop was the only one she needed to make to preserve the shutout for the Nor'easters, while Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) posted 11 saves for Roger Williams.

The Hawks close out the year with a record of 8-13.
