Field Hockey falls to Manhattanville

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team dropped its second home game of the year Saturday afternoon, as Manhattanville earned a 3-0 win over the Hawks.

The Hawks had two close chances to tally the first score of the game. The first came in the ninth minute, when Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) passed an Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) penalty corner to Meghan Curran (West Milford, Conn.). Curran lofted a high shot the sailed just over the goal. Then on the Hawks following possession, Curran found herself with another opportunity, but sent her shot just wide left.

The Valiants managed to grab the first goal of the game in the 13th minute. Nicole Fanelle (Burlington, N.J.) brought the ball into the left side of the arc and knocked in a shot into the left side for a 1-0 Valiant lead.

Manhattanville came inches away from taking a two-goal lead in the 24th minute, when Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands) took a shot from the right side of the arc and had her ball bounce off the right post. The Hawk defense managed to clear the ball away before the Valiants could capitalize.

Roger Williams had a pair of chances with the clock stopped at the end of the first half, taking two penalty corners with no time on the board. However, the Hawks were unable to get off a shot off of the corners and entered halftime trailing by one.

In the second half, Manhattanville tallied four corners in the first ten minutes of play, with the final one results in another goal for the Valiants. In the 44th minute, Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del.) sent a pass off of a Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H.) corner and found Smits on the right for the score and a 2-0 Manhattanville lead.

The Valiants added another score in the 48th minute, Brenna O'Neill (Hazlet, N.J.) gave a pass to McGuire on the right side of the arc. McGuire managed to put a shot into the left side for the final score of the contest and give Manhattanville a 3-0 advantage.

Manhattanville keeper Meghan Hughes needed three saves to record the shutout for the Valiants. Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) took the loss, giving up one goal with three saves. Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) played the second half, allowing two goals with four saves.

Roger Williams will play its rescheduled game against Framingham State this Monday at 7 pm, while Manhattanville heads up north to face Southern Maine on Sunday.
