Endicott pulls out close 5-4 win over Women’s Tennis

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team and Endicott College locked into a hard-fought battle, with the Gulls emerging with a 5-4 win.

The day began with an 8-4 win by Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine) at #2 singles, with the pair taking down Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.). The Hawks responded by notching a win at #3, with Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Conn.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) earning an 8-6 victory over Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) and Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) to knot the match up at one apiece.

The final doubles match between Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) and Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) of RWU and Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) and Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) of Endicott came down to the wire, with both teams battling back and forth. In the end, Bergstein and Rhodes emerged with the 9-8 (3) win to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead.

At singles, Endicott went on top 3-1 after Bennett notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hughes at #2. However, the Hawks grabbed the point back at #4, with Akerman taking down Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) 6-3, 6-1. RWU tied the match up at three apiece with Kaiserman defeating Andreasen 6-1, 7-6 (5) at #1, before Bergstein picked up a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at #6 to pull within one point of the match.

Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) rallied from down a set to earn the 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexi Losano (Saugus, Mass.) at #5 to set up the deciding match at #3.

The final point of the day came down to another marathon match featuring Schmidt—this time against Fitzgibbons. Schmidt began the match with a 7-5 win in the first set before Fitzgibbons took the second game 7-6 (5). In the final set, Fitzgibbons took the game 6-1 to put the match away in favor of the Gulls.

Roger Williams (3-1, 2-1 CCC) heads to Suffolk on Monday for a 6:00 p.m. match, while Endicott (3-1, 2-0 CCC) hosts Salve Regina on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
