Field Hockey bests Framingham State in OT

Box Score FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team picked up a road win Monday evening with a 4-3 overtime win over Framingham State University at Maple Street Field.

The Rams team received a pair of goals and an assist from freshman Meaghann Ackerman, but it was not enough as the Rams were defeated 4-3 in overtime this evening. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-3 on the year, while the Rams fall to 0-4 with the loss.

Roger Williams staked the early lead with a goal in the eighth minute from junior Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.). Freshman Jenna Clavette (Enfield, Conn.) laid a pass off to Curran in the circle and Curran redirected the ball into the back of the net.

The Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 ten minutes later as Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) tallied an unassisted marker. The Rams got one back in the 22nd minute as Ackerman sent a pass into the circle that classmate Hannah Carnes (Taunton, Mass.) shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Curran added her second of the game in in the 25th minute to push the Hawks lead back to two.

Ackerman pulled the Rams back within one in the 48th minute as the hosts took advantage of a penalty corner. Ackerman received the ball at the top of the circle and her initial attempt was blocked by a Hawk defender, but Ackerman corralled the loose ball and fired a shot into the back of the cage.

Ackerman knotted the game at 3-3 with 13:21 left in the regulation as she converted on another penalty corner. Senior Samantha Pajer (Leicester, Mass.) inserted the ball to sophomore Amie Souza (Taunton, Mass.). Souza laid a pass of to Ackerman who blast a shot for her second of the game.

In overtime, the Hawks had a chance to score early as Mahoney had a breakaway, but the Rams keeper Rosemary Talbot (Whitinsville, Mass.) came off the line and broke the play up before Mahoney could get a shot off.

The Hawks were able to score the deciding goal with 4:35 remaining in overtime as Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) sent a shot on net off a corner that hit the post, but junior Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) was there for the rebound and knocked it into the cage for the game winner.

The Hawks outshot the Rams 26-10 in the game and held a 2-0 edge in shots during overtime. Talbot finished the game with 13 assists for the Rams, while Mya Lunn recorded the victory making a pair of stops.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Plymouth State at 4 p.m. as part of FSU's Homecoming & Family Weekend. The Hawks return to the field on Wednesday afternoon for a CCC contest at the University of New England beginning at 6 p.m.
