Women’s Tennis wins over Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team left Boston with a 6-3 victory over Suffolk University Monday evening.

Roger Williams used strategic play taking two doubles courts and four wins in singles action to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Playing as the Rams (2-2) top tandem for the first time this season, Aidiana Sagyndyova and Rebecca Eshoo were handed an 8-3 loss by the racquets of Lauren Schmidt and Julia Akerman. Abby Trigilio and Valentine Medina put Suffolk on the board as the junior and freshman teamed up for an 8-4 victory in the second slot against Harley Kaiserman and Caroline McCarthy. In the toughest doubles match of the night, the Hawks salvaged a point with an 8-6 win by Kathryn Hughes and Gabrielle Riley over Lyndsay Reese and Isabel Rathlev on the third doubles court.

With the Rams down 2-1, Roger Williams quickly made its edger larger thanks to triumph on the fourth court. Trigilio was taken down by Akerman who tallied a golden set, before securing the victory with a 6-1 second-set score.

Sagyndykova rallied a comeback for Suffolk as she downed Kaiserman, 6-2, 6-3, on the first court to keep her 2015 singles perfect record intact.

The comeback was short-lived as the Hawks' used a 6-1, 6-0, victory from Schmidt over Eshoo in the third position to bring their lead up to 4-2.

Medina kept the Rams chances alive when the San Andrés Colombia native defeated Hughes, 6-4, 6-1, in the second spot, to make it 4-3.

Roger Williams did not let Suffolk tally another win as it went on to capture the fifth and sixth courts. Rathlev fell to Ali Stankiewicz, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5, while Elena Cisneros dropped her collegiate debut to Riley, 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth slot.

Suffolk does not get a break as it returns to the courts tomorrow afternoon when it travels to UMass Dartmouth for a reschedule match.
