Gordon holds off Women’s Tennis

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team fell 4-5 for the second straight match, this time to Gordon College Wednesday evening.

The Fighting Scots managed to win at the top two doubles flights to take the lead entering singles. Abigail Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) collected an 8-6 win at #1 against Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.). At the first flight, Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Katherine Jeffreys (Baltimore, Md.) took down Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) 8-2. Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Conn.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) got the Hawks on the board with a 8-1 win at #3 against Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wisc.).

At singles, Denney began with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kaiserman at #1, followed by Hanson notching a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hughes at #2. The Hawks would go on to take the following three matches at #4, #6, and #5. Akerman won her match 6-2, 6-2 against Jefreys, followed by Riley's victory at #6 over Drescher by the same score. Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) knotted the match at four apiece with her 6-3, 6-4 win against Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.).

Similar to Saturday's match against Endicott, the match came down to the #3 singles flight. Schmidt dropped the opening set to Yeaw 0-6, but rallied for the 7-6 (10-8) win in the second set. However, Yeaw came through for Gordon in the end, taking the final set 6-1 and earning the team win for the Fighting Scots.
