Women’s Tennis begins 2015 with 6-3 win over Simmons

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis began play in 2015 with a 6-3 victory over Simmons College Wednesday evening.

The Hawks began the match taking two of the three flights at doubles by identical 8-2 scores. Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) defeated Ashley Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) and Rachel Downey (Groveland, Mass.) at #2, while Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) earned the victory against Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) and Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) at #3. Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) and Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) helped get the Sharks on the board with an 8-6 win over Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) and Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) at #1.

Cokely grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win against Hughes at #2 singles, while Reinhard took down Kaiserman 6-0, 6-2 at #1. However, that would be all Simmons could muster, as the Hawks powered to the win on the strength of the bottom of the lineup. Riley picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pierce while Stankiewicz clinched the match for RWU with her 6-3, 6-0 win at #5. Akerman won in the super breaker, defeating 6-4, 7-6, 10-2.

Notably, Schmidt moved into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time singles wins list with 46 after beating Crowley 6-0, 6-1. She is now six wins shy of the school record.
