Field Hockey rolls to win over Nichols

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey Team earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory of the season with a 5-1 win over Nichols College Tuesday evening in CCC action.

Most of the opening part of the first half was punctuated by transition opportunities for both teams, but an inability to capitalize. The Hawks had two opportunities to notch goals in the first 20 minutes on identical plays. Each time, RWU brought the ball down the right side with a crossing pass over the middle to the back side.  The Hawks had an open goal off of the pass but could not corral the ball to get a shot off.

Roger Williams continued to remain aggressive on the offensive end, outshooting Nichols 6-2 over the first 20 minutes of play. The Hawks' efforts paid off in the 28th minute, as Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) tapped in a short pass from Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) to give RWU 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Curran found Elizabeth Whitney (Groton, Mass.), who was able to get behind the Nichols keeper and tuck in a shot in the right corner to put the Hawks up by two.

The Bison managed to cut the lead in half just before the end of the half. Erin Jillson (New Salem, Mass.) knocked a short pass to Courteney White (Orange, Mass.), who just got off a shot around the Hawk keeper to bring Nichols within one going into the second half.

Roger Williams was able to get the goal back in the 43rd minute to bring the lead back to two. Curran fired a shot that bounced off of the right post, but Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) took advantage of the loose ball and hooked the shot into the left corner.

With just over eight minutes left in the game, Nichols had a great chance to net a goal to pull the Bison within one. Brianna Kilborn (North Brockfield, Mass.) got a pass on a breakaway and had a one-on-one opportunity with RWU keeper Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.). However, she lost control of the ball before she could put a shot on goal, allowing Lunn to kick the ball away.

Roger Williams added two late goals in the final two minutes of the game to put the stamp on the contest. Curran tallied her fourth assist of the game, finding Miccile with a pass behind Katherine Cotton (Kennebunk, Maine) to make it a 4-1 game.

Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) tacked on the final score of the contest in the last minute, making her way around the defense and scoring the fifth goal of the game and her fifth on the year.

Lunn earned the win for RWU, needing only two saves for the Hawks. Cotton had a busy evening in goal, stopping 12 shots on the night. Curran's four assists in the game set a new single-game school for, breaking her previous mark of two.

Roger Williams (3-5, 1-0 CCC) will be back in action on Friday, hosting Western New England University at 6:00 p.m. Nichols (1-5, 0-2 CCC) will welcome Endicott College on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
