Field Hockey puts five on Western New England in win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team collected its second straight win Friday evening, as the Hawks defeated Western New England by a 5-3 score.

The win moves the Hawks to .500 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference at 2-2 and 4-5 overall. Western New England drops to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCC.

Roger Williams struck first in the contest, getting the first goal of the contest in the fourth minute. Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) sent a pass across the back side of the goal area to Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) Mahoney was able to secure the pass and sink in her sixth goal of the season for 1-0 Hawk lead.

However, the Golden Bears answered immediately. Western New England brought the ball down on the ensuing draw and scored on their first possession. Lauren Palmateer (Coxsackie, N.Y.) hit Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) on the right side with a pass, with Carlson knocking a shot into the left corner to tie the game at one apiece.

RWU's Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) nearly regained the lead for the Hawks in the ninth minute. She found herself with a shot on the left side of the goal after a penalty corner. Treweek had an open shot, but was denied via a kick save from Golden Bear keeper Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.)

The Golden Bears grabbed the advantage in the 19th minute. Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) served up a pass to Katherine Ferrari (Westport Point, Mass.) on the left side, giving her the opportunity to put in a shot in the left corner, bringing WNE on top 2-1.

Roger Williams came back with two consecutive goals before the end of the half to go back up by one. In the 24th minute, Miccile gave Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) up the middle, who then sent a shot to the left corner as she was falling down to tie the game at two. Five minutes later, Curran scored her second goal the game to give RWU the lead. MaryKathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) found Curran open on the left side for the go-ahead score.

In the 44th minute, Roger Williams added its fourth goal of the game on a great transition play. Miccile made her way down the right side of the field; then sent a strong cross pass to a streaking Curran. Curran gained control of the ball and made her way into the arc and looked to have a good shot, but she sent a touch pass to Mahoney to her left, who converted the shot to give RWU a 4-2 advantage.

Western New England came close to pulling within one in the 48th minute. Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) fired a long shot from the top part of the arc into the back of the goal. However, it was ruled that she was outside of the scoring area, wiping the goal off of the board.

The Golden Bears rallied with a late goal with just under five minutes left. After a yellow card left the Hawks a player down, Antinozzi and Ferrari connected for the second time on the evening. Ferrari scored her fourth goal of the year to bring the Golden Bears within one.

However, RWU got the goal right back with three minutes left. Mahoney finished with the hat trick, taking a pass from Treweek and sending a shot through multiple Golden Bear defenders to find the back of the goal. Her third score of the game tied a school record for most goals in a game.

Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) picked up the win, making eight saves for RWU, while Trupe had four stops in the loss.

Roger Williams will be off for nearly a week, as the team's next game will be Thursday, October 1 at UMass-Dartmouth. Western New England travels to Endicott on Wednesday.
