Women’s Tennis rallies in singles for win over Nichols

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team used strong play at singles to earn a 6-3 victory over Nichols College Saturday afternoon.

Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) started the day on positive note for the Hawks by sweeping Bison rivals Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) and Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) 8-0 during the first doubles match of the day. Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) followed but came up short, losing their match 9-7 to Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) and Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) lost in the final game of their intense doubles match with Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia), falling 9-8 with a tiebreak at 8-6, and the final loss at 9-8.

With the Bison in the lead 2-1 at the end of the doubles matches, the Hawks stepped it up by winning every single match except for one.

Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) defeated Carey at #5 without dropping a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Riley followed by taking down Keklik with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #6. Akerman was next to finish, coming out victorious as well at #1. Her opponent Saldarriaga put up a fight, but lost to the aggressive Akerman with a final score of 6-1, 6-1.

To further the Hawks' lead, Schmidt took down Dallaire with two straight wins, 6-2, 6-0.

In the toughest match-up of the day, Kaiserman fell short to the aggressive Candia. Kaiserman fought hard the second match, but it wasn't enough against Nichols' #1 player, dropping the match 6-2, 6-4.

Hughes ended the day for the Hawks on a positive note, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Christina Szepanski at #2.

Roger Williams (8-2, 5-2 CCC) heads to Clark University on Thursday, while Nichols 6-3, 4-3 CCC) hosts Colby-Sawyer College tomorrow.
