WENHAM, Mass. – The second-seeded Endicott women's tennis team defeated third-seeded Roger Williams, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinals to secure a trip to its sixth straight title match in an as many years.
Endicott swept all three doubles flights to begin today's match, and later capitalized on that momentum in singles behind wins from Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine) to push its winning streak to nine in a row, and more importantly advance to the CCC title match.
The Gulls (11-3), who are the five-time defending conference champions, will now take on first-seeded Nichols on Saturday, October 22 in the CCC championship in Dudley, Mass. at a time to be determined later. The Hawks' fall season comes to a close at 12-4 overall.
In their last two meetings, which includes the 2015 CCC title match, Endicott had only secured a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles against Roger Williams.
Andreasen and Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead in the contest with an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles, before Barnett and Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) recorded an 8-6 triumph at No. 1.
Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) and Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep with a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4) win at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Barnett breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 before Andreasen turned in a gritty 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win at No. 5 to clinch the match after Roger Williams notched its lone victory at the No. 3 position by
Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.).
Today's match was moved to Gordon College due to unplayable conditions at Endicott's South Campus Courts.
