Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team could not pull out the Commonwealth Coast Conference win over Gordon College Tuesday afternoon, as the Fighting Scots collected a 2-1 road win over the Hawks.
Â
The early part of the game saw both teams patrolling the ball up and down the field, but struggling to get a clear shot on goal.
Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.) had the first shot of the game for either team at the eight-minute mark, but would be turned away by Gordon Keeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine).
Â
Two minutes later, the Hawks finally broke through with the first score of the game.
Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) put up a shot that was saved by Hicks and bounced towards McNeil, who went for the put-back. Her shot would bounce off of a Gordon defender, leading to an RWU penalty stroke.
Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) took the stroke for the Hawks and buried it in the left corner for a 1-0 RWU lead.
Â
The Hawk defense did a strong job of stifling the Fighting Scot offense, holding Gordon without a shot until the final two minutes of the half. Unfortunately for RWU, that would be enough time for the Fighting Scots to tie the game.
Â
A penalty corner for Gordon in the 33rd minute led to a shot by Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) that would be saved by Hawk goalie
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.). The save would kick the ball behind her and to her left towards the right side of the goal. Rachel Castonguay (Wayne, Maine) got to the ball first and tucked in a shot just inside the right corner to help send the game to halftime tied at one.
Â
Gordon managed to take the lead six minutes into the second half. Sabrina Jandreau (Winslow, Maine) served up a penalty corner to Allcroft. She would take a high-arching shot that sailed over the Hawk defense and bounced into the left corner of the goal to put Gordon up 2-1.
Â
For the second half, it would be Gordon's turn to hold down the Hawk offense. Roger Williams managed to continue to gain possession, but would be held without a shot for most of the period.
Â
Gordon caught a close break with just under nine minutes to play when the Hawks made their way into the scoring area and looked poised to tie the game. RWU was able to put a shot up that scored in the right side of the goal, but would not count as the Hawks were called for a foul right before the shot was taken.
Â
The Hawks made one last push in the final two minutes of play but could not capitalize. RWU drew a penalty corner which led to a shot by
Taylor Powell (Windham, N.H.). Yet Hicks stopped the shot to help propel Gordon to the win.
Â
Hicks needed three saves to pick up the win for Gordon, while Lunn stopped two shots in the loss.
Â
Roger Williams (2-8, 2-4 CCC) will host Salve Regina University on Friday, while Gordon (5-6, 2-4 CCC) takes on Endicott on Saturday.
