Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team could not find its first win of the season, as the Hawks fell 2-4 to Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon.
Â
The early part of the game did not see any offense action until the seventh minute.
Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.) secured the ball off of a long pass and sent it to
Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) on the right side of the goal. She would put a shot on target but had it blocked by Valiant keeper Kaitlin Halloran (Neconset, N.Y.).
Â
Towards the middle of the period, the Valiants began to pick up the pace offensively. Ameerah Thomas had a close chance in the 16
th minute that bounced off of a Hawk defender high and punched away by RWU keeper
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.).
Â
The Valiants' aggressiveness paid off in the 19
th minute when Bredje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands) slipped a pass to her left to Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J.) for a shot towards the middle of the goal. Her shot would glance off of a Hawk defender and just bounce inside the right corner of the goal.
Â
Manhattanville's lead would only last until the 26:58 mark when McNeil tied the game with her second goal of the season. She managed to corral a loose ball in the goal area that was kicked away by the Manhattanville keeper. McNeil slipped it just past the goalie to tie the game at one apiece.
Â
The Hawks had a great chance to take the lead in the closing minutes of the half, getting seven penalty corners in the final seven minutes of play. Unfortunately for RWU, the team wasn't able to log the go-ahead goal, keeping the game tied heading into the second half.
Â
The Valiants would regain the lead shortly into the second half. Less than two minutes into the half, Stys served a penalty corner to the top of the arc to Smits. She would fire a deep shot just inside the scoring area into the left corner of the goal for a 2-1 Manhattanville lead.
Â
The Hawks quickly responded three minutes later with McNeil's second score of the afternoon. Her goal came roughly in the same manner as her first tally of the day. She would put back a loose ball off of kick save by the Valiants' keeper to knot the game at two.
Â
Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) almost put the Hawks back on top in the 43
rd minute with the keeper on the far side of the goal. She went to score on the open goal, but was denied on a crucial diving defensive save by Haley Linkroum (Deposit, N.Y.).
Â
Manhattanville would go back on top on the return back down the field. A kick save by the Hawks gave Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va.) an opportunity to tap in the ball into the left corner for a 3-2 Valiant lead.
Â
Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J.) added to the Valiant advantage in the 50
th minute. After a Hawk foul, Smits put the ball in play with a hard shot from 25 yards out. Cirocco got a stick on it and was able to tap it into the left side of the goal, putting Manhattanville up by two for good.
Â
Halloran made seven saves for Manhattanville in the win, while Lunn also stopped seven shots for Roger Williams.
Â
Roger Williams (0-3) will look to bounce back Wednesday with the team's Commonwealth Coast Conference opener against Western New England University. Manhattanville (2-1) travels north to face Southern Maine on Sunday.
