Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team won its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener with a 7-2 victory over Western New England University Saturday afternoon.
After waiting through a rain delay, the Hawks began the day by taking two of the three doubles matches.
Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) and
Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Conn.) took down Christina D'Agostino and Joeanna Glantz 9-0 at #1, while
Allie Grinavic (North Attleboro, Mass.) and
Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) won 8-1 over Jessica Breitweg and Kim Phu.
At singles, RWU picked up wins at five flights to roll to the team win. Kaiserman came back from being down 4-6 in the opening set to win the final two sets 6-2 and 10-6 for the victory. Hughes and Glantz squared off again, this time at #2 singles. Hughes would earn another win, defeating Glantz 6-3, 6-1.
At #3, Akerman logged a 6-1, 6-0 victory over D'Agostino, while
Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win against Breitweg.
Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) capped off RWU's win by taking down Petra Martinelli 6-1, 6-2 at #6.
Roger Williams (2-1, 1-0 CCC) will host Suffolk University next on Monday.
