Field Hockey Notches First-Ever Win Over Salve

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team never trailed, jumping on top 49 seconds into the game on the way to its first-ever victory over Salve Regina University. The Hawks smothering defense kept the Seahawks out of rhythm and limited their chances in the game.

This was the seventh all-time meeting between the two teams. Salve Regina still own a 6-1 record over Roger Williams.

Roger Williams sophomore Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the second. Junior MaryKathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) was a disruptive presence defensively for the Hawks all night long.

Salve Regina junior Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) kept the Seahawks close by stopping 10 of 13 shots on goal.

The Seahawks had just five shots in the second half and were held shotless by the Hawks for the final seven minutes as the Hawks did not allow the Seahawks out of their own end.

The Seahawks fell behind 2-0 when Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) put in a rebound at 45:22. After a timeout the Seahawks responded immediately when Lindsey Venuto (Foxboro, Mass.)tipped in a shot from Jillian Mosca (Whitesboro, N.Y.) to cut the Hawks lead in half. Roger Williams continued to dominate play though by controlling the ball and six minutes later after consecutive corners Sydney MCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.) scored in a scrum in front to reestablish a two score lead. A lead the Hawks would not relinquish the rest of the night.

Roger Williams outshot the Seahawks 22-11 and held a 8-6 advantage in corners. Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) stopped four of five shots on goal in the cage for Roger Williams.

On Saturday, Salve Regina (5-1, 1-1 CCC) plays the University of New England, while Roger Williams (2-5, 2-2 CCC) will also face UNE on Saturday, October 1.
